People of India are constantly falling prey to cancer. Cancer statistics have increased in the last few years. Recently, the World Health Organization has released a report to alert people about this. According to the latest WHO estimates, in 2022, there will be more than 14.1 lakh new cases of cancer in India and more than 9.1 lakh deaths due to the disease.

Lip, mouth and lung cancers were the most common among men, accounting for 15.6 percent and 8.5 percent of new cases, respectively, according to estimates from the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARAC). Also, breast cancer and cervical cancer were the most common among women. Their share in new cases was 27 and 18 percent respectively.

IARC is WHO's cancer agency. It was also found that the number of people surviving five years after being diagnosed with cancer is about 32.6 lakh in India. Globally, the agency estimates 20 million new cases of cancer and 9.7 million deaths and about 5.3 million people alive five years after treatment. One in five people suffer from cancer and one in nine men and one in 12 women die from the disease. In India, the risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 is 10.6 percent, while the risk of dying from cancer in the same age group is 7.2 percent. Globally, these risks are 20 percent and 9.6 percent, respectively.

WHO published survey results from 115 countries, saying that most countries do not adequately finance cancer and pain care services as part of universal health coverage (UHC). IARC projections show that 10 types of cancer could account for nearly two-thirds of new cases and deaths globally in 2022. Their data covers 185 countries and 36 types of cancer. The analysis found that lung cancer is the most common cancer (12.4 percent of all new cases) and the leading cause of cancer deaths, accounting for about 19 percent of all cancer deaths. The cancer agency said tobacco use could be a potential cause of the resurgence of lung cancer as the most common cancer in Asia.

IARC found that breast cancer (11.6 percent of all new cases) is the second most common cancer in women and accounts for about seven percent of cancer deaths globally. Statistics also show that cervical cancer was the eighth most commonly diagnosed cancer globally and the ninth leading cause of cancer deaths. While tobacco, alcohol and obesity are the main factors behind the rising cases of cancer, air pollution still remains a major environmental factor, the agency said.
