Bureau Report: There is both good and bad news for the people of Gurdaspur. The good news is that a Sikh youth from their area, Dilpreet Singh Bajwa, has been selected in the Canadian national team. The bad news is that due to constant neglect by the Punjab Cricket Association, Dilpreet has decided to play from Canada. The Canadian team is going to participate in the World Cup Qualifying Tournament. It is going to start in Bermuda from September 30 and Dilpreet Singh Bajwa will now be seen playing for Canada.
The ex-cricketers are shocked and they allege that the players from the border and back districts always do the same to them. They say that who else can know this reality better than Dilpreet Singh Bajwa. That is why despite playing well, Bajwa’s talent was repeatedly rejected.
Bajwa’s coach Rakesh Marshall said that he always practiced in the government college where Rakesh Marshall ran the cricket academy. Dilpreet did his schooling from Shri Guru Arjan Dev Senior Secondary School, Dhariwal. Her father Harpreet Singh worked in the Punjab Agriculture Department while her mother Harleen Kaur is a teacher in a government school. The parents saw that despite the hard work of their son, he is being neglected continuously, so the parents decided to shift to Canada in 2020.
In three years, Dilpreet Bajwa has now got a place in Canada’s national team. Bajwa is an all-rounder and has impressed everyone with his ability in Canada’s home Global T20 tournament. He performed brilliantly for the Montreal Tigers, after which a decision has been taken to include him in the national team.
International players Chris Gayle, Tim Southee, Carlos Braithwaite, James Neesham also participated in Globber T20. Gayle became a disciple of Dilpreet Singh Bajwa’s game. According to parents, before they decided to go to Canada, Dilpreet was completely disconnected from the whole system and hated the cricket kit. Then Coach Marshall told the family that Dilpreet is very capable and full of skills then took him to the net for practice.
After the confidence of Coach Marshall and the encouragement of his parents, Dilpreet started playing cricket again. Before leaving India, he had scored 130 runs against the Patiala team in Under-19. He was supposed to be selected in the state under-19 team, but the selectors sidelined him. He still feels the pain of it. Dilpreet also performed well in district level cricket in Punjab from which the Ranji team is selected but still he was rejected every time.
According to Dilpreet, now that he has been selected in the Canadian national team, the selectors who rejected him every time are surprised to hear him. Dilpreet is waiting for the World Cup qualifiers to start on September 30.
