One such new study has shown that the erectile dysfunction (ED) drug Viagra can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by 69 percent. According to this research published in the journal 'Nature', it has been found that this drug has a direct effect on brain health and significantly reduces toxic proteins that can cause dementia.
Despite the excitement about the promising results of the study, experts advise that clinical trials are still necessary, so do not start using the drug unnecessarily. Still, the study results are promising enough that the drug could someday be used to combat dementia. A new team of experts is preparing to conduct another study that builds on this data, but this study will be conducted on Viagra's generic salt, sildenafil, in patients suffering from early Alzheimer's.
The lead researcher of the study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic. Feixiong Cheng said sildenafil, which has been shown to significantly improve cognition and memory in preclinical models, has been touted as the best drug. Sildenafil may have neuroprotective effects and may reduce levels of toxic 'tau protein'.
Another recent study has revealed another weapon in the fight against dementia. This weapon is 'coffee'. Research shows that coffee consumption can significantly reduce the chances of developing dementia. This study sheds light on this mysterious disease, which still has no cure. Coffee doesn't reduce or fight Alzheimer's like some drugs do, but the study found that while people who drank more than average amounts of coffee didn't suffer from memory loss, they were less likely to have mild cognitive impairment.
