A total of 1,362,145 passengers arrived at Brussels Airport last month, marking an increase of 65 per cent compared to the same period in 2022.

It is asserted that the number of passengers was boosted by the carnival holidays, which have been extended to two weeks, until March, for French-speaking school students, compared to one week for Dutch-speaking students, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Data provided by Brussels Airport also revealed that the share of transfer passengers was more than 16 per cent, double the figure of last February, confirming the airportโ€™s position as a major hub.

Such data show that among the ten destinations for those departing from Brussels during February are the following:

  • Spain
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Great Britain
  • Switzerland
  • France
  • United States
  • Turkey
  • Portugal
  • Morocco

According to airport figures, cargo volumes at the airport decreased by two per cent last month compared to the same month last year, mainly due to a 16 per cent drop in truck cargo volumes and current geopolitical tensions.

โ€œCompared to February 2022, air cargo volumes increased slightly by two per cent. Here, the full cargo segment grew by a healthy five per cent, while cargo carried on passenger aircraft also grew by six per cent. Overall, the number of flight movements increased by 27 per cent in February 2023 compared to 2022. During this period, the number of passenger flights increased by 44 per cent compared to the previous year, averaging 136 passengers per flight. On the other hand, there was a five per cent decrease in the number of cargo flights compared to February 2022, mainly due to the ban on passenger flights with cargo in July 2022.

Furthermore, airport data for the month of January 2023 revealed that the number of passengers at Brussels Airport increased by 66 per cent, reaching a total of 1.3 million passengers.

In this regard, the airport said that these figures show a strong recovery in the sector, as 80 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels recorded in January 2019 have been reached in January of this year.
