Swiggy Zomato Delivery Boys Face Challan After Bike Taxi Ban: The Transport Department of Delhi has issued a notice banning bike taxis. It states that bikers in Ola, Uber and Rapido are using two-wheelers with private registration numbers. He is doing commercial operation with a private number bike. This is a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988. Using a private bike as a taxi service will attract a fine of Rs 5,000 for the first time and Rs 10,000 for the second time or thereafter. Along with this, the driving license of the driver will be suspended for at least 3 years.
The ban on bike-taxi services in Delhi is affecting the delivery boys of food delivery apps Swiggy and Zomato. It has come to light that the suppliers who deliver food in two-wheelers have been challaned. These companies have complained about this to the Delhi government. Food delivery platforms have sought clarification from the government on this directive, claiming that the notice has been misinterpreted as the ban is applicable to bike-taxi service providers.
Swiggy has said in a letter to the government that a fine of up to Rs 15,000 is being imposed on those who deliver food items under the guise of a ban on bike-taxi services. A Swiggy spokesperson said, the rules on bike-taxi services in Delhi have been changed recently, causing confusion and disruption for food delivery aggregators. Despite the notification being applicable only to bike-taxi service providers, challans are being wrongly issued to our delivery staff.
He said that some of the challans issued to the delivery staff are of more than Rs 15,000. Seeking clarification on the matter, Zomato has written to the Transport Department of the Delhi Government saying that the RTO officials have misinterpreted the notification. When contacted, a Zomato spokesperson said, the notice is only for passenger vehicles. Some of it has been misinterpreted.
Last month, the Delhi Transport Department warned against bike-taxis, saying it was a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and aggregators could be fined up to Rs 1 lakh for this. Use of two wheelers for commercial purposes is a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. (with language input)
