Maharashtra The government on Monday announced an assistance of Rs 300 per quintal to the farmers of the state affected by the sharp fall in onion prices. Announcing this in the state assembly, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that this decision would provide relief to onion growers. There has been a big fall in the prices of onions in Maharashtra, in such a situation, farmers are not getting a fair price for their produce. Shinde said that due to increase in onion production, the price of the crop has come down. He said that onion crop is very important for the state and it is becoming a sensitive issue.

In Maharashtra’s Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), onion prices had come down to Rs 2-4 per kg. Unable to recover even their cost, angry farmers had stopped the auction of onions in the mandi. After this, a demand was made from the government to compensate the losses of the farmers.
Onion prices will fall till March
Onion prices will continue to decline till rabi or low winter damage crop hits the market in mid-March. Experts said this on Tuesday. He said that there is a glut of supply in the market due to which farmers are getting only a small part of their cost for the produce and angry farmers have stopped trading in Lasalgaon, Asia’s biggest market in Maharashtra on Monday. The fall in prices will continue till mid-March till rabi arrivals begin and traders will pay higher prices for the commodity as arrivals last longer. Maharashtra is one of the largest producers of onions, accounting for 40 per cent of the country’s onion production.
