The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. ICC has taken this action due to government interference. The ICC said it believed there was widespread government interference in Sri Lanka’s cricket administration, which resulted in the dissolution of the country’s cricket board.

The ICC Board met today (Friday) and decided that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a member. They are specifically required to manage their affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in governance, regulation and/or administration. The ICC Board will take a decision on the terms of the suspension in due course, the ICC said in a statement.

Let us tell you that Sri Lanka had their worst performance in the World Cup since 1992 and won only two of their nine matches. Many players of the former champion team were struggling with injuries. Even the captaincy had to be changed in the middle of the tournament.

Sri Lanka’s performance against India was very poor. The entire team was all out for 56 runs. After this, the Sports Minister dismissed the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Later, the court reinstated him, which deepened the crisis.

What did the chief selector say?

Chief selector Pramodya Wickremesinghe on Friday alleged that there was an outside conspiracy behind Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the World Cup. When asked about the reason for the poor performance, Wickramasingha said that give me two days, then I will tell everything. It is the result of an external conspiracy. He said, I am very sad. I take responsibility for it.

Earlier on Thursday, the Parliament of Sri Lanka unanimously passed a resolution to dismiss the country’s cricket governing body. It got full support from the ruling party and opposition parties. Leader of the main opposition party Sajith Premadasa tabled a motion in Parliament titled ‘Remove the corrupt Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) management’, which was fully supported by senior government minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Two days ago, on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal reinstated Shami Silva-led Sri Lanka cricket management. Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe on Monday sacked the Sri Lankan cricket management and appointed former World Cup-winning captain Arjun Ranatunga as the head of a seven-member interim committee to run the cricket board.
