The Punjab government has clarified that the letter issued in the past has been misinterpreted as per the Factories Act 1948 regarding working hours. The spokesperson of the government said that it has been clarified by the labor department of Punjab that it has been stated in point number 1 of the issued letter that a maximum of 12 hours of work can be made from one worker during the working day. He said that by misinterpreting it, working hours have been taken as 12 which is wrong.

The spokesperson clarified that as per the section of Factories Act 1948, the number of working hours is 8 hours as before. According to the Act, no adult worker can be employed for more than 48 hours.

If the number of working hours of a worker is increased then the adult worker is required to be given overtime as per Section 59 of the Factories Act 1948. According to this article, if a worker working in a factory works more than 9 hours during a working day and works more than 48 hours in a week, then he must be paid twice the daily wages.

The spokesperson clarified that according to the Factory Act and Rules, no worker can overtime for more than 7 consecutive days. Also, the working hours of any worker cannot exceed 60 in a week, nor can the working hours of a worker exceed 115 in a fortnight.
