During the state cabinet meeting in Dibrugarh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the Assam government will buy 20% stake (Rs 1,000 crore) in the Uttar Pradesh power project to meet the growing power demand in the state. Assam will also get 400 MW power from that project. He informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on April 14 and in his presence the Assam government will try to get the state’s festival ‘Bihu’ registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. The state is over-utilised, with average daily usage ranging from 1,900 MW to 2,200 MW per day and expected to increase to 3,200 MW soon. To tide over the crisis, we are currently procuring power from the national grid at the rate of Rs 12 per unit.

plan to develop in three phases

With many industries coming up in the state and the state’s limitation for power generation due to lack of hydro or thermal pathways, we now need to either invest in purchasing power or power generation, he added. Ghatampur Thermal Power Plant is a 1,980 MW super-critical coal based power project under construction at Ghatampur in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The project is being developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture between Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC, 51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL, 49%). The coal-based power plant is planned to be developed over an area of 1,886 acres in three phases of 660MW each. The estimated investment in the project is Rs 17,237 crore ($2.52 billion). Each unit will be equipped with a super-critical, forced-circulation, and pulverized-firing boiler, a 3,000rpm multi-cylinder reheat condensing turbine generator, and a natural draft cooling tower.

performance on 14 april

To take Bihu into the Guinness World Records, the Assam government will organize a big Bihu event at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, where around 10,000-15,000 Bihu artists will perform on April 14. We are planning to take Assam’s Bihu to the global level.
