Mumbai : Bollywood veteran actor Anupam Kher remains very active on his social media. Where he keeps sharing pictures and videos every day. In the video, he says, “My great-grandfather knew Sanskrit and Hindi, used to wear tilak on his forehead and turban on his head, then it was the turn of my grandfather, he took off his turban, but he kept wearing the sacred thread, my grandfather did not know English at all.” Far from knowing, they used to cut the cane in the name of English. My father understood a little bit of English, some by himself and some by Ardhachakra, but he used to use English out of compulsion.

He used to fill all the government forms in Hindi only. His Janeu was also zero, but the use of Sanskrit was negligible. It was the same period when culture was being lost along with Sanskrit, so Sanskrit was declared a dead language, then gradually the time changed and a new era came. I not only read English but also chewed it well. I lifted myself from Hindi to English as well as shifted the Janeu to the Pooja Ghar. Now unnecessarily I blurt out two or four sentences in English. Maybe that’s why I am called educated in the society and moreover, I have changed many relationships – maternal uncle, uncle and uncle are now known by the name of uncle. I change my tone and call Veda as Veda and Ram as Rama and remain proud of this so-called success of my story.
My kids are going even further. I had chewed the ritual. They are digesting in English. Means they are told Dadi means Granny, Rama Vaj a Hindu God is proudly taught. When Mrs. ji tells her water means water and she smiles slowly at this progress of hers. Don’t know why the Janeu of my house of worship shouts and slowly mumbles some mantras just like that. Where is this development taking India? The culture has disappeared, now the language has also been left behind. Like Sanskrit, Hindi will also be declared dead one day. Perhaps that day the land of India will be fully developed.
The actor shared the video and wrote in the caption, “For every Indian: my great-grandfather, my grandfather, me and my children…… Our culture, Sanskrit language, Hindi and changing India….!!!
