Accommodation & Food Services Sector in Germany Sees 45.4% Revenue Growth in 2022

Turnover in accommodation and food services has improved in 2022, increasing by 45.4 per cent compared to the preceding year, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reveals.

According to a press release by the authority, in nominal terms, which indicates unadjusted prices based on the season or other factors, turnover rose by 55.7 per cent, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The results were 1.1 and 0.8 percentage points higher than in the annual estimate, respectively.

In general, turnover in accommodation and food services rose by 35.4 per cent (in nominal terms) compared to the previous month and 24 per cent more in real terms compared to the same period of the previous year.

As per the previous month, the turnover in the industry was down by 13.5 per cent in real terms while in nominal terms those dropped by 13.1 per cent.

While the real result of turnover in accommodation and food services stood at 81.6 in December, it was 79.7 during the season.

At the same time, Destatis has revealed that the tourism industry had a successful year in 2022, showing strong indications of recovery, however, it still remains below 2019 levels when no COVID-19 restrictions kept the industry from development.

More specifically, a total of 450.8 million overnight stays were recorded in 2022 โ€“ up by 45.3 per cent compared to the preceding year. Compared to pre-pandemic levels, it remains 9.1 per cent below.

โ€œThe tourism industry in Germany recovered partly from the COVID-19 crisis compared with 2021. Based on provisional results, Destatis reports that accommodation establishments in Germany recorded 450.8 million overnight stays of visitors last year. This was an increase in overnight stays of 45.3 per cent compared with 2021, but still, a decline of 9.1 per cent compared with 2019, the year before the crisis,โ€ the authority explains in a press release.

The same further revealed that the highest volume of nights spent at German accommodation facilities was recorded during summer, with August being the busiest month. A total of 58.2 million overnight stays were recorded during this month in Germany.

With slightly fewer nights spent but still quite busy months, July and June recorded 56.3 million and 48.9 million overnight spent, respectively.

In contrast to the summer season, during other months like January, February, and March, German accommodation spots saw the lowest number of overnight stays โ€“ a total of 18.8 overnight stays in February, and 25.1 million overnight stays in the following month.

As of December, tourism accommodation facilities recorded a total of 27.5 million overnight stays โ€“ 57 per cent more than in December 2021.
