Assam Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma on Sunday said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has now found a “definite basis” in the case of singer Zubin Garg’s death after receiving the viscera report. Sharma said four more Assamese migrants who allegedly witnessed Garg’s last moments will reach Guwahati on Monday and appear before the CID to record their statements.

“The Delhi-based Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL) has given us the viscera report,” the Chief Minister said in a ‘Facebook Live’ session. I am happy to say that now CID has got a definite lead in the case. In a few days, the entire incident of Zubin Garg (death case) will be presented before the court.

The famous singer died while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. He had gone to the south-east Asian country to participate in the fourth Northeast India Festival. After Garg’s post-mortem at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the viscera sample was sent to CFL for detailed examination. CID special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta had said on Saturday that the viscera report has been received and has been handed over to GMCH for preparation of final post-mortem. The first post-mortem was conducted in Singapore soon after Garg’s death.

The second post-mortem was conducted at GMCH on September 23, after which his body was taken for cremation. Garg’s wife Garima had returned her husband’s post-mortem report to the police on October 4, saying it was not her personal document and only the investigators could decide whether it should be made public or not.

Police had issued fresh summons to 10 people associated with Assam Association Singapore after they failed to appear before the investigating agency within the October 6 deadline. So far only one Assamese from Singapore, Rumkamal Kalita, has appeared before the CID and has been interrogated for more than 24 hours.

Regarding the remaining six people who have not responded to the notice, Sharma said: I will ask them to come forward for Zubin Garg, who was the identity and heartbeat of every Assamese. This is their legal and moral responsibility. “If they do not come, we will take the legal route,” he said. Once their statements are recorded, we will be able to present the case before the court.” Earlier, Northeast India Mahotsav chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma and his two band members – Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta were arrested.
