Zilla Parishad and Samiti elections in Punjab may be held in December, elections may be announced any time after November 25.

Soon the political arena is going to burn in Punjab. District council and committee elections in Punjab can be held in December. The work of formation and reservation of blocks has been completed. Elections can be announced anytime after November 25. Elections are to be held for 23 Zilla Parishads and 154 Councils in Punjab. It is scheduled to take place at the end of the second week of December.

According to the information received from the sources, the elections of Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti may be held on December 14. That day is also a Sunday holiday. The Rural Development and Panchayat Department has filed an affidavit in the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding conducting these elections by December 5.

These elections can be announced only after the ceremony dedicated to the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur is over. The Rural Development and Panchayat Department has formed the zones of Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti and these zones have also been reserved. District-wise government notifications regarding the zones and their reservation regarding the proposals prepared by the Deputy Commissioners are continuously being released.

This time the Punjab government has reserved the block as a unit. The state government has also reorganized the blocks, due to which villages have been exchanged in one block or another. According to sources, the work of reservation of zones has been carried out only with the consultation of MLAs and ministers. Elections for 23 district councils and 154 panchayat committees are to be held in the state.

In response to the petition filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab government had previously given an affidavit that the committee and district council elections would be held by May 31. After that the process of reorganizing the blocks started. From the High Court, the department expressed a commitment to hold these elections by October 5, taking three months’ time. Meanwhile, Punjab came under the grip of floods and with reference to them, the department again gave an affidavit to the High Court to hold elections by December 5. These elections are likely to be held on the basis of January 2025 electoral rolls. There were 1.33 crore voters in Punjab during the Sarpanchi elections. Before this, panchayat elections were held on 15 October 2024. The last elections of Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti in Punjab were held on 19 September 2018 during the government of Captain Amarinder Singh, while these elections have been held many times in Punjab before.
