Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suffered a setback from the Israeli Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has put an interim stay on the move to sack the head of the internal intelligence department Shin Bet, Ronen Bar. The court has given a deadline till April 20 for a mutual agreement.
After 11 hours of debate, the Supreme Court panel said that Ronen will continue to be in his post at the moment. Opposition parties challenged the Netanyahu government’s decision to remove Ronen Bar of Shin Bet. Netanyahu decided to remove the head of the internal intelligence department citing ‘lack of trust’.
Currently, Ronen will continue in office
The Supreme Court said that the dismissal of Shin Bet’s head weakens the freedom of democratic institutions. The court said that the government should not announce the appointment of any caretaker chief and the new intelligence head till the final decision of the court. The tension between Netanyahu and Ronen has been increasing since the attack of Hamas terrorists on Israel in October 2023 and ‘Qatar Gate’.
