Where she was dining with boyfriend. The incident has exposed the serious flaws of police investigation. Considering it as a very serious case, the court has asked the District Superintendent of Police (SP) to submit the entire report by 17 April.
In fact, Suresh, who lives in a village near Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, married a woman named Mallige 18 years ago. The couple have two children. His wife Mallige suddenly went missing in November 2020.
Suresh had lodged a complaint of disappearance of his wife Mallige at Kushalnagar Rural Police Station. Shortly thereafter, a woman’s skeleton was found in Bettadarpura (Periyapatta Taluk) area. The police arrested Suresh as a skeleton of Mallige and registered a case of murder and filed a charge sheet.

Suresh had to serve in jail for 2 years on charges of murder of his wife.
Chargesheet before DNA report
According to Suresh’s lawyer Pandu Pujari, the police filed a charge sheet in the court before the DNA report came, while Mallig’s mother’s blood samples were sent to investigate the skeleton. Later, when the DNA report came, there was no mail in it, that is, the skeleton was not of Malliga. Nevertheless, the court rejected Suresh’s discharge application and started an investigation into witnesses.
Woman found alive in hotel on 1 April
On behalf of Suresh, the villagers and the mother of Mallige testified in the court that Mallige was alive and ran away with someone. Despite this, the police remained adamant on their report that Mallige had been killed and the skeleton belongs to him.
On 1 April 2025, Suresh’s friend saw Mallige with another man at a hotel in Madikeri. He informed the police and Mallige was brought to Madikeri Police Station. He was then produced in the Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court.
During interrogation in court, Mallig admitted that she had run away with her boyfriend Ganesh and married her. She also reported that she was living in Shettihalli village, just 25-30 km from Madikeri, but the police never tried to find her.
Court sought response from police, summoned SP
Taking the case seriously, the court questioned the investigation of Kushalnagar and Bettadarpura police and asked on what basis the police filed a charge sheet when the woman is alive. The police had no clear answer. The court has now directed the District Superintendent of Police (SP) to submit the full report by 17 April.
Lawyer said – Police do injustice, now they will demand compensation
Suresh’s lawyer said, “We are waiting for the final order of the court. After this we will file a petition in the High Court, so that Suresh can get compensation for mental and social loss. We will also complain to the Human Rights Commission and Scheduled Tribes Commission as Suresh is from the community and is very poor.”
The lawyer has demanded that the case should also be investigated in this case that the skeleton which was described as Mallige was actually. Did the police falsely implicate Suresh to stop both the cases in a hurry.
