Sun TV Network Limited has approached the Madras High Court against the ‘A’ certificate to the film Coolie starring Rajinikanth by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), making it illegal to watch the film in theaters for people under 18 years of age.He argues that the film has been evaluated incorrectly compared to similar big films.Justice TV On Tuesday (August 19, 2025), Tamilselvi considered the civil diverse appeal to be considered by the production firm against the CBFC’s decision and directed the High Court Registry to numb the case and lisk for admission before them on Wednesday (August 20).

Sun Pictures says that ‘Coolie’ has action scenes equal to films like ‘KGF’ and ‘Beast’, which got the U/A certificate, yet they have faced more rigorous classifications.In the court debate, the central government counsel A Kumaraguru claimed that the petition was not conscious. However, senior advocate J. Ravindran, with the help of M Sneha, successfully defended it and stated that under the Cinematographs Act, 1952 and the Tribunal Reforms Act, 2021 (which dissolved the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal), the High Court has the right to hear such appeals.

Despite requesting CBFC several times for the U/A rating, both the investigation and modification committees retained the ‘A’ rating citing the depiction of violence in the film.However, Sun Pictures has emphasized that Rajinikanth’s fans have been for many generations, and the young viewers are an important part of the superstar’s historic release celebrations. He argues that keeping children and teenagers away from theaters weakens the basic spirit of this film, which was seen as a public entertainment.
Parents were seen fighting with theater owners to allow children to enter the hall in many theaters in Tamil Nadu.Artists like Nagarjuna Akkineni and Aamir Khan appeared together in Lokesh Kanagaraja’s huge budget ‘Coolie’. The film was released on the completion of 50 years in Rajinikanth’s cinema.
