Unrest has arisen again in Assam this week as protests were violent demanding the status of Scheduled Tribes (ST) to the coach-Rajbongshi community in Golkganj in Dhubri. The demonstration, began as a peaceful demonstration, turned into clashes and injuries after alleged police action, resulting in a 12 -hour closed and long pending demand for constitutional recognition came again to the center.

How did the violence begin?
On Wednesday night, the Akhil Coach-Rajbanshi Students Union (AKRSU) took out a torch procession from Chilrai College to Golkganj Bazar. Thousands of people took to the streets in this rally organized on the demand of Scheduled Tribes and separate ‘Kamatapur’ state and police and paramilitary forces stopped them on the way. The protesters allege that the security forces lathi -charged despite the peaceful march, injuring several people, including women. The incident caused widespread anger and AKRSU on Thursday called for a 12 -hour shutdown in Dhubri.

Demand for Scheduled Tribes Status
Coach-Rajbongshi is not alone in his movement. Along with them, five other communities – Tai -Ahum, Chutia, Matk, Moran and Tea Tribes – have been demanding the status of Scheduled Tribes for decades. He argues that recognition is necessary to protect their land rights, cultural identity and socio-economic security.
