When you deliver …, a wonderful statement of a Congress MLA from a woman journalist

On being told by a journalist that people, especially pregnant women, are having trouble with not having a hospital in the area, a Karnataka Congress MLA made a remark that surprised many people. The MLA, while eyeing the woman journalist, said, “Don’t worry, we will get you treated elsewhere.” MLA and former minister R.V. from Haliyal in Uttara Kannada district Deshpande was asked by a journalist in front of many of his colleagues and cameras when the hospital would be built in Joida taluka (district subdivision), as local residents, especially pregnant women, are upset due to lack of hospitals.

The MLA replied, “We will get your work done in Halial.” The journalist could not believe the answer and asked, “What, sir?” However, Deshpande smiled and blindly said, “When your delivery time comes, we will get it done.” Deshpande’s remarks have reacted sharply by media and political leaders and described it as an insult to the dignity of women. Many people have demanded that Deshpande publicly apologize to the journalist without delay.

A media rights group said in a statement, “As a senior MLA, Deshpande’s comment is not only unfair, but also extremely abusive.” It further stated, “Such comments degrade the profession of journalism and underestimate women’s concerns. We expect our elected representatives to maintain dignity and present examples.” Shahzad Poonawala, spokesman of the Bharatiya Janata Party, also criticized Deshpande.
