Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju on Thursday urged judges to exercise restraint in court and “speak less”. 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore had allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and accused him of insulting the Hindu religion. Earlier, the Supreme Court Bar Association terminated the membership of lawyer Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice of India inside the courtroom. Finding him guilty of serious misconduct, his membership was terminated.

A 71-year-old Supreme Court lawyer allegedly tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai in his courtroom, prompting the Bar Council of India to suspend his license with immediate effect. The lawyer was heard raising slogans “Will not tolerate insult to Sanatan Dharma”. The Chief Justice, who remained undeterred by the unprecedented incident during and after the court proceedings, asked the court officials and the security personnel present in the courtroom to ignore it and let off the convicted lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, with a warning.

Lawyers, including bar bodies, SCBA and SCAORA, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and political parties strongly condemned the incident, calling it an “attack on the Constitution and the institution as a whole.” Kishor, a resident of Delhi’s Mayur Vihar, was interrogated by Delhi Police officials for three hours at the apex court complex and was later let go at 2 pm as no formal complaint was lodged.
