India and China’s diplomatic relations had come to an end after the military deadlock started after Chinese infiltration in May 2020 in Eastern Ladakh. Since then, the two countries have tried to improve relations, resumed the Mansarovar Yatra, issued visas for Chinese tourists and are considering to resume direct flights. However, these efforts were again shocked in May when India found evidence of active Chinese assistance to the Pakistani army during the enmity after Operation Sindoor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China’s port city Tianjin from 31 August to 1 September to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where he is also likely to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Prime Minister’s first visit to China is taking place at a time when the two sides are trying to improve bilateral ties under serious tension after the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China is taking place a few days after meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in New Delhi. Sharing information about the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said that both India and China are constantly progressing towards strengthening their diplomatic relations. He said in the post on X that he was happy to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi Jinping in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made continuous progress with respect for each other’s interests and sensitivity. I am eagerly waiting for our next meeting to be held in Tianjin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Stable, predicted and creative relations between India and China will contribute significantly to regional and global peace and prosperity.
