The 2025 Federal election votes are being cast in Australia today. In this election, the main contest is between the current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party and opposition leader Peter Datton’s Liberal-National Alliance.

There are two houses in Australia just like our country. The upper house is called the Senate and the Lower House called the House of Representatives. The leader of the party or coalition that gets a majority in the lower house becomes the Prime Minister.

Voting is to be held today for its 150 seats. Its result will come on the night of 3 May or by the morning of 4 May.

Along with this, voting is also to be done for 40 out of 76 seats of the House above. The tenure of the members selected in this House would have been 6 years and half the members change every 3 years.

Parliament was dissolved on 28 March 2025 in the country, after which the government went into caretaker mode. This was followed by postal voting from 22 to 30 April.

Mandatory voting in Australia

In Australia, all citizens aged 18 or older have to vote compulsorily and if they do not do so, they can be fined 20 Australian dollars.

Age is not fixed to become Prime Minister here. In other words, people who can vote 18 years or older can also contest elections and also become Prime Minister.

Major issues electoral issues

Labor party leads in election survey In the survey conducted before the election, the Labor Party has shown an edge. It is estimated that the labor party can win 84 seats, while the Liberal alliance may get 47 seats. If this happens, Albanese will become the Prime Minister of Australia for the second time.

Although the Hung Parliament (hung parliament) is also being estimated, if this happens and no party can win 76 seats, then the government may have to be formed with small parties. In 2010, Julia Gillard formed a similar government.
