After his team’s victory and match-winning century in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, Indian batsman Virat Kohli opened up about his preparation and his approach towards the game. Kohli scored his 52nd ODI century and set a record for most centuries by a batsman in a single format. Virat scored 135 runs in 120 balls with the help of 11 fours and seven sixes, making it one of his most memorable centuries in recent times. Speaking during the post-match presentation, Virat said that he wants to live in an atmosphere of joy. After announcing his retirement in May this year, amid media reports of the BCCI requesting him to return to Test cricket following the 0-2 defeat against South Africa at home, Virat clarified that he is playing only one format of the game and it will continue to be so.
He said that it felt really good to enter the match like this today. The pitch played well for the first 20-25 overs, then gradually started slowing down. Just had to remain in an atmosphere of joy. Of course, when you get the start, you adapt to the situation, you know what to do. Experience helps. I never believe in preparation. All my cricket has been mental. As long as I am in good physical condition and have mental acuity, everything is fine. I took a day off before the match. I am 37 years old and I need time to heal.

In the presentation ceremony after the match, Virat said that it always happens like this – I am playing only one version of the game. If you’ve played 300-plus matches and that much cricket, you know that when you hit balls in practice, you know that the reflexes are there, and the physical ability to bat for long periods of time is there. As long as you are hitting the ball well and playing good cricket, it is important to remain physically fit, mentally prepared and excited.
