Vice -Presidential election on 9 September, last date of nomination till 21 August, know full schedule

A few days after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, the Election Commission on Friday announced the election schedule for the post of Vice President. A notification issued by the Election Commission states that the voting for the 17th Vice Presidential election will be held on 9 September. The notification states that the last date for filing nominations for the election is August 21, Thursday, while the candidates can withdraw their names by a maximum of 25 August. The election became necessary after the resignation of outgoing president Jagdeep Dhankhar on 22 July.

The Vice Presidential election schedule is as follows:

Election Commission notification date date- August 7, 2025 (Thursday)

Last date of nomination- August 21, 2025 (Thursday)

Date of nomination check- August 22, 2025 (Friday)

Last date for withdrawal of nominations- August 25, 2025 (Monday)

Voting date (if necessary)- September 9, 2025 (Tuesday)

Date of counting (if necessary)- September 9, 2025 (Tuesday)

The announcement was made after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, which has led to competition for his successor. 74 -year -old Dhankar took over in August 2022 and had his term till 2027. After a sudden resignation of Dhankhar, a shocking incident for the government in the Rajya Sabha came to light when he was assigned a notice of a proposal sponsored by the opposition to remove Allahabad High Court Judge Yashwant Verma and mentioned it in the House.

How is the Vice President election?

According to Article 63 to 71 of the Constitution and according to Vice President (Election) Rules, 1974, formal elections are required within 60 days of Dhankar’s resignation and before 19 September 2025. The electoral college or electoral college consists of all members of both the houses of Parliament – the renovated and nominated – which are selected through single transitional vote through proportional representation systems. MPs will cast single transferable votes through secret voting.
