Kiren Rijiju said that in the meeting of NDA Parliamentary Party leaders chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, it was unanimously decided that the NDA had authorized the Prime Minister and the House leader JP Nadda in the Rajya Sabha to start the process including the selection of the candidate.

Sadan leaders of NDA parties held a meeting on Thursday and authorized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda to select their candidates for the Vice Presidential election. JP Nadda is also the leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that all parties of the ruling coalition will accept the decision taken by Prime Minister Modi. The meeting was chaired by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. It is also reported that the NDA will announce the Vice Presidential candidate on August 12.

All the NDA parties will accept the decision taken by the Prime Minister. Nominations for the Vice Presidential election can be filed by 21 August. Voting will be held on 9 September and counting will also be held on the same day.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notification for the election schedule for the post of Vice President of India. This election is being held because Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, citing health reasons. Dhankhar’s resignation states, “To give priority to healthcare and follow medical advice, I resign from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.”

In the coming days, opposition parties are also expected to discuss the selection of their candidate for the election. The Election Commission has finalized the list of electorates for the 2025 Vice Presidential election. The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of Parliament by a single transitional vote according to the proportional representation system and voting in such elections is done by secret voting. The election to fill the vacancy arising out of the end of the tenure of the Vice President is concluded before the end of the term.
