Sudipto Sen’s controversial film ‘The Kerala Story’, which sparked a fierce debate for his alleged propaganda-based plot, won two big awards at the 71st National Film Awards-Survashreshtha direction (Sudipto Sen) and Best Cinematography (Prashantu Mahapatra). Explaining the decision, Jury member and filmmaker Pradeep Nair said that the film was selected on the basis of his “relevance”, which the jury considered “a major social issue in India”.
