Trump to host Syrian President al-Shara at ‘White House’: Official

US President Donald Trump will hold talks with Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara at the ‘White House’. An administrative officer gave this information on Saturday. This will be the first visit by a Syrian President to the White House, the official residence and office of the US President. This meeting has not been formally announced.

The official said on condition of anonymity that the meeting is likely to be held on November 10. Trump met al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia in May, the first meeting between US and Syrian leaders in 25 years.

Syria is struggling to recover from decades of international isolation. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of Trump’s meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council leaders, was seen as a major development for Syria.

Syria has still not recovered after more than 50 years of harsh rule by the Assad family. There was once a bounty of US$10 million on Al-Sharaa. Al-Sharaa, known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, had ties to al-Qaeda and joined insurgents fighting US forces in Iraq before entering the Syrian war

He was also imprisoned there by American soldiers for many years. The official said that during this visit, Al-Sharaa can sign an agreement to join the US-led coalition against ISIS.
