Indian boxer Lovelina Borgohen (69 kg), who is competing in the Olympics for the first time, has done well. On Tuesday, she advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Germany’s Nedin Appetz in a hard-fought match.

Lovelina, the only Indian boxer to enter the ring, defeated Apetz, 11 years her senior, in the pre-quarterfinals. Both athletes were making their Olympic debuts and Lovelina became the first player to make it to the last eight of the nine-member Indian team. Now she can secure the medal with the victory.

In a stressful bout, 24-year-old Lovelina showed great emotion and managed to win by a very close margin. If Lovelina makes it to the semifinals, her bronze medal is guaranteed. The quarter-final match will be played on July 30.
