The Indian squad for the home series against New Zealand could be announced in the next few days. The biggest headache for the selectors, led by Chetan Sharma, will be over the selection of the T20 captain.
Importantly, the current captain Virat Kohli has already announced that he will step down as captain of this small format after the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in the UAE.
According to a report, current vice-captain Rohit Sharma is the main contender for the T20I captaincy. But it is also likely that senior players will be rested for the three-match T20 series against New Zealand as Indians have been playing cricket continuously since April.
With Kohli relinquishing the captaincy of the T20 format only, the selectors may consider appointing only one captain for the white-ball format. Chief selector Chetan Sharma and his fellow selectors Abe Kuruvilla are in Dubai, while the rest of the selectors are currently in India.

Players selected for the New Zealand tour may be asked to report by November 10. They will then have to go through a five-day quarantine a few days before practice. Meanwhile, the formalities for the appointment of the next head coach of Team India are yet to be completed. It is likely that Rahul Dravid, who has already applied for the post, can join the team by then.
There is still concern over the team’s support staff. The last date for applications for the post of head coach was October 26. But the last date to apply for a fielding, batting and bowling coach is November 3. However, it is not clear whether the interviews for these posts will be completed by November 10. According to reports, some non-cricketers had applied for the posts.

However, the decision on the head coach and other support staff seems to be a mere formality. Even the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which interviews the head coach, has not been formed. Importantly, one of the CAC members, Madan Lal, is over 70 years old and his term has already expired. In such a scenario, BCCI will have to take several decisions in the next one week.
The New Zealand team is going to play three Twenty20 Internationals and two Tests on the tour of India, the first Twenty20 will be on November 17 in Jaipur. The other two Twenty20 matches will be played on November 19 in Ranchi and November 21 in Kolkata. The first Test will be played in Kanpur from November 25, while the second Test will be played in Mumbai from December 3.
