The world’s first treaty for protection of marine biodiversity in the international water sector

Morocco on Friday became the 60th country to approve the first treaty for the protection of maritime biodiversity in the international water sector. The treaty will be applicable from the beginning of next year.

The treaty is the first legal framework to protect marine biodiversity in the international water sector, which apply to water areas that are outside the jurisdiction of one country. The international water sector is about two-thirds of the ocean and about half of the Earth’s surface.
