The Taj Story Controversy Controversy over Paresh Rawal’s film ‘The Taj Story’, legal battle begins, know the whole matter

The trailer of the upcoming film The Taj Story was released on Thursday (October 16), which stars actor Paresh Rawal in the role of a tourist guide who seeks to uncover the alleged secrets associated with India’s most famous monument.Although it has faced some criticism for casting doubt on well-established history, it is worth noting that the claims about the Taj are not new. In May 2022, the Allahabad High Court rejected a petition that sought “a fact-finding committee to study and publish the real history of the Taj Mahal” and a “direction to open the sealed doors (about 22 rooms) inside the Taj Mahal to quell the controversy”.

BJP official demands ban on Paresh Rawal’s film ‘The Taj Story’

Allegations and claims regarding the film The Taj Story have now come to light. An office-bearer of the local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has filed a complaint with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seeking a ban on the upcoming film The Taj Story starring actor Paresh Rawal, claiming that the film is based on the subject of a petition he filed in the High Court.

Petition to open 22 rooms of Taj Mahal

BJP’s Ayodhya unit spokesperson Rajneesh Singh had filed a petition in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court in October 2022, seeking opening of 22 locked rooms inside the Taj Mahal, claiming that the monument was originally a temple. In his complaint to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the CBFC on Monday, Singh said, “I had filed a PIL to open 22 closed rooms of the Taj Mahal. My aim in the said petition was only to ensure transparency and verification of historical facts. I have come to know that the film The Taj Story is based on the subject of my petition.

He alleged that “In the film’s poster, promotional material and story, the judicial subject matter, context of the petition, and related details have been presented without my permission and in a misleading manner. This is a violation of my intellectual and legal rights. Commercial use of a judicial case is also inappropriate. Screening of such a film can not only affect the judicial process but can also create unnecessary tension in social and religious sentiments,” Singh said.

The BJP leader has demanded an immediate stop to the censorship process and the public release of The Taj Story. He said that the script and story of the film should be examined to determine whether it used the content of his petition or any intellectual work without his consent. The BJP leader has urged to ban the promotion, screening and telecast of the film until the investigation is completed.

Singh’s plea, in which he had urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to form a committee to provide clarity on the history of the monument, was dismissed by the High Court in May 2022. The Taj Story is an upcoming Hindi film written and directed by Tusshar Amrish Goyal and produced by Suresh Jha. It stars Paresh Rawal, Zakir Hussain, Amrita Khanvilkar, Namit Das and Sneha Wagh. The film explores the controversial questions surrounding the construction of the Taj Mahal and challenges traditional historical narratives about the monument.
