Justice of Supreme Court Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice K.K. The bench of Vinod Chandran, while delivering the verdict, said that “language is not of any religion, but of community, region and people. Language is culture and the criteria of society is the criteria of civilized journey.”

The Supreme Court has rejected a petition challenging the use of Urdu language with Marathi on the board of Patur Municipal Council in Akola district of Maharashtra. On Tuesday, the court made strict remarks saying that “there is no religion of language and considering Urdu only the language of Muslims is an unfortunate misunderstanding of the truth and the diversity of India.”

The petition was filed by former corporator Sanjay Bagade, stating that the work of the city council can only be done in Marathi and Urdu should not be used on the board. The petition was first rejected by the city council and then the Bombay High Court. Finally the petitioners reached the Supreme Court.

Justice of Supreme Court Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice K.K. The bench of Vinod Chandran, while delivering the verdict, said that “language is not of any religion, but of community, region and people. Language is culture and the criteria of society is the criteria of civilized journey.” The court said that Urdu language is the best example of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb and it is born on the land of India.

The court said- to consider Urdu to be a foreign or only a language of a particular religion, completely wrong

The Supreme Court also commented on the misconception that it is completely wrong to consider Urdu to be a foreign or a particular language of a particular religion. The court said, “The reality is that the daily use of Hindi language is also incomplete without Urdu words. The word ‘Hindi’ itself has also come from the Persian word ‘Hindavi’,”.

The court said that the division between Hindi and Urdu was done on the basis of religion in the colonial period, which is still present as a big misconception. He also said that “We need to confront the truth of our prejudices. Let us be friends with Urdu and every language.”

No restriction on use of Urdu language

The Supreme Court said that there is no restriction on the use of Urdu language in the 2022 Maharashtra Public Authority (Official Language) Act. Only the use of Marathi is mandatory, but the use of other language with it is not prohibited. Hence the petition is based on the misinterpretation of the law and is rejected.
