The Supreme Court asked IIT Kharagpur: Why are students committing suicide in campus?

IIT Kharagpur told the apex court that about a month ago, an FIR was lodged on the day of suicide of a student of fourth year mechanical engineering in his hostel room. The affidavit of IIT Kharagpur states that an FIR was registered on 18 July after completing the necessary procedural formalities by the police. The argument has been given by the Supreme Court after the recent instructions given to IIT Kharagpur and Sharda University, seeking to clarify whether the police were immediately informed and whether the FIR was lodged, as is mandatory in the court’s 24 March verdict on student suicides.

The Supreme Court pulled up IIT Kharagpur and expressed concern over the increasing incidents of students’ suicides in the campus. A division bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan asked what is wrong with IIT Kharagpur? Why are students committing suicide? Have you considered it? The apex court was hearing an automatic cognizance case related to suicide of students at IIT Kharagpur and Sharda University. Earlier, it had directed both institutions to file their reply.

IIT Kharagpur said in the affidavit that it has considered the incident a catalyst for widespread institutional improvement and has already implemented several additional measures in addition to compulsory security measures. The institute has accepted the severity of such unfortunate incidents with extreme seriousness and recognized them as both institutional and social tragedies that require harsh introspection, accountability and systemic reforms.
