The second government farmers meet in Ludhiana’s PAU

Second Sarkar-Kisan Milni at PAU: On Thursday, the second government farmer meet was held at PAU in Ludhiana. The meeting, which was held under the patronage of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, was chaired by the Minister for Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Migrant Affairs, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal.

The purpose of this meeting was to consult with the farmers of Punjab and know their views for formulating the agricultural policy in the future. Thousands of farmers from across Punjab participated in this meeting. At dozens of stalls, farmers consulted experts on crop sowing and other issues of their interest. In the consultation hall, the Agriculture Minister stopped at each stall and interacted with the farmers, listened to their grievances and got their views on their suggestions and solutions to the problems. Later, reaching the main pandal, he addressed the farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, Agriculture Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that this meeting has two objectives. First, to know the opinions and suggestions of the farmers to take out the agriculture from the traditional crop cycle and secondly to make the new agricultural policy of Punjab based on these suggestions. The Agriculture Minister made a special mention of all the efforts made by the current government for the betterment of agriculture in the past. He said that an immediate and transparent policy of crop procurement has been made. The government has paid the dues of sugarcane to the farmers and has also increased the price of sugarcane.

He said that it is necessary to make agriculture a profitable occupation to solve not only the challenges of agriculture but also the problems of Punjab. He said that the suggestions of farmers will be included in the agricultural policy which is going to be implemented on June 30. He welcomed the participation of foreign farmers and encouraged them to share their experiences with the farmers of Punjab. The Minister of Agriculture said that the government is committed to the smooth solution of water. In 97 percent of Narama belt, canal water has been reached on time. He said that making the distribution of water, electricity, seeds transparent is the main objective of the government.

The Agriculture Minister appealed to the management of stubble as per the recommendations of PAU. S. Dhaliwal referred to the government’s initiative towards creating an appropriate policy for the cultivation, marketing and processing of vegetables, fruits and maize etc. as agricultural diversification by removing wheat from the crop circle of paddy. Dhaliwal gave special emphasis on cultivation of low water-consuming paddy varieties PR 126 and Basmati. The Agriculture Minister said that the present government’s dream is to do everything possible to take Punjab’s agriculture back to the top.

Animal Husbandry Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said that this initiative of the government is to honor the experiences of farmers. He said that in the coming days, a similar meeting is also planned with the cattle breeders. He said that by making a good policy on animal husbandry and supporting businesses will be promoted so that the tendency of youth to go abroad can be stopped. He emphasized on animal husbandry to meet the domestic requirement of milk.

Vice Chancellor of PAU Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal speaking the welcome words on this occasion said that this exclusive meeting is happening for the second time in the yard of PAU in which farmers from all over Punjab are participating. Dr Gosal said that about 15 thousand farmers participated in the first meeting held on February 12, this time this number is more than before.

According to the suggestions of the farmers received from the first meeting, PAU is giving new directions for its agricultural research and expansion. While welcoming the migrant farmers, he said that the meeting of fifteen progressive farmers from five countries and joining them in the farmers’ conference is an effective step to increase our courage. Dr Gosal said that the university has recommended less water consuming varieties for the coming monsoon season. He also said that the aim of the university is to increase the income of farmers and promote environment-friendly agriculture.

On this occasion, migrant farmers Kewal Singh Basi, Mintu Brar, Paikar Singh Grewal, Rajinder Singh Mand, Amandeep Singh Sidhu, Rumel Singh Toor, Dr. Bikram Singh Gill, Gurrit Brar, Hardeep Singh, Gurraj Singh Dhillon, Dr. Inder Mann, Gurinder Singh Aujla, Jagbir Singh Shergill was honored.

The Minister of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister was honored by the university. Two books were also released on this occasion. In these, the coffee table book Farmers and Agronomists’ Inseparable Relationship by Dr. Tejinder Singh Riad, Miss Sheetal Chawla and Kulbir Kaur and the book The Roots of Prosperity by Dr. Sheetal Thapar, Daninderpal Singh, Dr. Vishal Bacter and Dr. Ashu Toor were released.
