The Human Rights Commission has directed the Punjab government to compensate those who died by drinking sewage water

The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has directed the Punjab government to pay Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the families of two persons who died after drinking sewage water. Complaint number 6414/15/2019 was sent by Rohit Hans Advocate belonging to Patiala in the Commission.

Complainant Rohit Hans has told that people of village Bathonia, tehsil Ghanoor, district Patiala are forced to drink contaminated water in the drinking water due to leakage of sewage pipe in the village. Due to lack of portable water supply and leaking sewage lines, dirty water is mixing with drinking water. After this, two people died in the village and many people suffered from stomach ailments.

A report received from the Chief Medical Officer, Patiala, stating that the outbreak was at a point source, which the Health Department said was in respect of sick persons and made every effort to contain the said outbreak. The report also alleged illegal connections and unsafe supply in the drinking water supply department.

The report alleges illegal connections and unsafe supply of drinking water supply is the subject of the department. Another report in this regard was received from the Deputy Commissioner, Patiala dated 18.03.2020.

This commission’s letter dated 01.01.2019 regarding the letter received on 25.02.2020 from the Executive Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Patiala, it is recorded that the water sample was tested on 14.01.2020 and the same Got the portable after doing repair and maintenance work.

The reply to the said reports was filed by the complainant on 23.07.2021. According to the said reply, the complainant has expressed his satisfaction over the report. Due to the efforts of the complainant Rohit Hans, the chairman of the commission Justice Sant Prakash and member Justice Nirmal Jeet Kaur have instructed the Punjab government to release two lakh rupees as compensation to the family of the deceased.
