When he got into the war, there was no fear

Katoch says- I joined the army at the age of 19. It was only two years since I joined me when there was a war with Pakistan in 1965. I was posted in the third battalion of Rajputana Rifles in Poonch.

Katoch says that my father fought for Azad Hind Fauj. He always used to say that if something is to be done in life, then the army should join.

At the behest of Papa, the army was joined but did not know what the war is. He definitely thought that the death of the dog is better than death, Bahadur’s death is dying. If age was together, enthusiasm was also very much. What is fear, he did not know.

Katoch hails from Himachal, but his first training was done in Bhopal.

The bunker was filled with water to the shoulder Katoch said- the war had started. We were going from Rajouri to Poonch, where the enemy blocked our path. Road and culvert were broken. We reached Rajouri, by then it started raining. The entire area was flooded. There were two vacant houses there. We decided that the firing started from behind.

The unit felt that the Pakistani army had reached. However, the firing was done by the Indian Army so that the intruders could not capture the vacant houses. At that time there were no means of communication, so our Indian Army could not be contacted and we stayed in the bunker overnight. Water was filled to our shoulders.

After the rain stopped, we came out somehow. Pakistan started bombing there. We retaliated on our behalf.

The country goes far behind the war Two days before going to Poonch, our bunker was near our front. There, Pakistan dropped three bombs, one fell into a paddy field and one fell 50 meters away from him. As soon as the bomb fell, we jumped into the front but our partner was standing there. He found a bomb rock and he expired there.

After this, he was immediately ceasefire and we were posted in our place. We stayed in the bunker for 12 days. Katoch says that if I start telling about war, the whole day will pass. The time of war was very adventurous for us, but the war causes a lot of damage. The country goes back several years.

Pictures of Pakistani area used to send intelligence

Describing the situation of the 1971 war, Gulab Rai says- I was with my family in the first week of December. Suddenly two trucks came in front of the house. I was immediately asked to sit in the truck. I raised the uniform-shoes in my hand and jumped into the truck and sat down. Within five minutes, the truck took us towards Adampur. There it was discovered that VR in a State of War With Pakistan.

Our Air Force was completely adjacent to the station border. Sukhoi-7 had plagued Pakistan. He used to return after bombing the Pakistani area. We made trenches (pit under the ground) to keep ourselves safe. Our food and drinking, living and being there were everything there. The Air Force was a bunker for the pilot.

Gulab Rai's wife has passed away. Two daughters are married. They live alone.

Used to put camera in aircraft wings Rai further says- Just as the rays of the sun shine, so Pakistan used to bomb us. I was a photographer. We had to install cameras in the aircraft wings. The work of installing cameras behind the aircraft was mine. We used to send these photos to intelligence.

Pakistan tried hard to find out our Air Force Unit, but it could not find out. Just once, the bomb fell in our area because the villagers burnt petromax lights at the wedding.

Used to get only 1 minute to take food Gulab Rai says- Eating in an army vehicle used to come. We used to come out of the trenches when the siren rings. We used to live only one minute. In that we had to take food. The day the day he was late in taking food, then understand that on that day, either had to be hungry or any other arrangement was to be made.

Our trench had our base, where there was a canteen. In the event of not getting food, a man ran away and went to the canteen. Used to keep the eggs to boil there. After some time, he ran away with boiled eggs. By eating it, we used to eradicate our hunger. Tea and parathas were found for breakfast in the morning, they also had to run away. Meanwhile, when tea fell, he did not go to take back. In this way we stayed in trenches for 13 days.

Father sent emotional letter before Kargil’s war begins

Draigendra Pratap Singh says- It was the month of May. I was posted in Suratgarh. From there we had to go ahead. At that time, news of Kargil War had started coming on the news channel. My father used to watch news channels. They also understood that the war will start in a few days now. He sent me a letter. I was upset for a day or two after reading it.

He wrote that not everyone gets a chance to serve the motherland, you have got it. If you have to give your sacrifice while protecting the motherland, then there will be no more pride for me.

Draigendra says- When I read that letter, first I felt that how are you a father? The son is going to death and saying that it is a matter of pride for him.

One of my colleagues was from Rajasthan. Seeing me upset, he asked that everything is fine in the house, so I said- yes, okay. However, if he did not agree, I caught him a letter.

The letter of letter reached the CEO Draigendra says- Two days later we returned to the unit. Our CEO was AV Parlekar. He had a habit of giving a demo of everything. Someone had sent the matter of father’s letter to CEO Saheb. He asked me for that letter and circulated it everywhere. All were ordered to read the letter.

Their aim was that every person of our unit should join the war with this spirit. A few days later we reached Kargil. There the National Highway became deployed on Alpha One. Which was Pakistan on one side and India on the other side. We had day food, but we did not have food at night.

We used to halt during the day and move at night. To keep his gun, he used to make 27 feet long, 17 feet wide and 2.5 feet deep pit. Also made 12x8x7 feet pit for gold. Used to sleep by putting balls on it.
