The building has no relation with Satyajit Ray, Bangladesh cleaned on demolition by citing old records

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that a detailed investigation of archival records has re -confirmed that the concerned house had no connection with the eminent award winner Satyajit Ray. It was built by local zamindar Shashikant Acharya Chaudhary next to his bungalow ‘Shashi Lodge’ for his employees.

The interim government of Bangladesh on Thursday denied reports that the great filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s ancestral house at Maman Singh has been demolished. The government claimed that the building was completely safe. The government clarified that the disputed building had no connection with Ray’s family. After the eradication of the zamindari system, this house came under government control. It was later allotted to the Bangladesh Shishu Academy and since then it has been used as the office of the District Shishu Academy. The land, which was known as non-agricultural government (special) land, was leased on a long-term basis to this land. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that after reviewing the land records, it has now been established that this property belongs to the government and it has no connection with the Ray family. Neal senior citizens and eminent persons of various communities have also confirmed that the Ray family and the infant academy have no known historical relations between the currently leased house and the land. This house is also not listed as an archaeological monument.

The road in front of the house, named ‘Harikishore Ray Road’, is built in memory of Satyajit Ray’s great-grandfather Harikishore Ray, who was the adopted parents of Upendra Kishore Ray Chaudhary, grandfather of Ray. The Ray family once used to have a house on this road, which they sold long ago. That original house is no longer present, it is replaced by a multi -storey building built by the new owner. Professor Bimal Kanti Dey, a respected civil society member of Mayan Singh, shared information about the confusion about the ownership of the house. Local poet and writer Farid Ahmed Dulal also confirmed that this house had no connection with Satyajit Ray or his family.
