Team India announced for England tour, Shubman Gill becomes captain of Test team, Rishabh Pant gets this responsibility


Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s 37th Test captain. The BCCI confirmed the decision on Saturday 24 May during the Senior Selection Committee meeting in Mumbai. Ajit Agarkar -led Selection Committee and BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia met at the board headquarters and selected an 18 -member team for the 5 Test series against England in Hadingley from June 20. Rishabh Pant was chosen as Shubman Gill’s deputy for the England tour.

The team is as follows

Shubman Gill (Captain), Rishabh Pant (Vice -captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Ishwar, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Rabindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurlel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohmad Siraj Siraj, Krishna, Akash Deep, Akash Deep, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Singh and Kulpandi Yadav.
Gill replaced Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket in May. Gill has been elected beyond Jasprit Bumrah, who has already captained India in three Tests, including two matches in Rohit’s absence in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. At the age of 25, Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold this position in recent years. However, they do not have the experience of captaincy in the red ball format. Gill is also captaining Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. Gill has captained only five first class matches.

Gill is also working as a vice-captain in ODIs and T20s. He was the deputy of Rohit Sharma in India’s winning Champions Trophy campaign in UAE in February 2025. In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries. His uplift in this role indicates a visionary decision by the selectors, which in favor of long -term continuity in the form of transition in the team’s new World Test Championship cycle.
