AIADMK leader Edappadi’s Palaniswami announced that if his party wins next year’s assembly elections, there will be an unity government formed by his party in Tamil Nadu. This statement comes at a time when there is speculation that there is talk about his All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and his ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

But with the statements of the former Chief Minister, any discussion of the coalition government in the southern state seems to be halted, where the BJP has historically struggled to maintain its hold and relevance. Palaniswami said that our alliance will win … but AIADMK will form the government on its own. He said that this alliance is being led by AIADMK (and) this is my decision. The EPS also rejected the rumors of tension with the BJP, with which they had aligned in the 2019 federal and 2021 state elections. He said, “The media needs a sensational news … but there is no crack in our alliance. AIADMK will achieve a majority and form the government independently.” The former Chief Minister started his 2026 election campaign last week describing an alliance with the BJP as a natural alliance, which would be “good for the people of the state”.

This week’s comments are similar to the comments made in April – a few days later – when the two parties announced the alliance again.
