The Taliban-run agriculture ministry said the first shipment of pomegranates from Kandahar was exported to Russia on Monday, with 25 metric tons sent through the Torghundi border crossing in northwestern Afghanistan. The ministry further said that the initiative aims to establish long-term commercial relationships with Russian importers. According to the ministry, this pilot consignment, worth approximately $25,000, will be used to assess demand and logistics feasibility in the Russian market. The ministry further said that if the initial phase is successful, up to 250 tonnes of Kandahar pomegranates will be exported to Russia by the end of the harvest season.

A Taliban spokesman for the Kandahar agriculture department said this is the first time our pomegranates are reaching Russian consumers. This is a major step towards diversifying Afghanistan’s fruit exports and opening new trade corridors.The pomegranates of southern Afghanistan, especially Kandahar, are renowned for their quality and taste. Meanwhile, the Kandahar Chamber of Commerce and Investment has confirmed that the first shipment of Kandahar pomegranate has been shipped from the province to Russia. The chamber said that up to 200 tons of pomegranates are expected to be exported to Russia this year. The development comes at a time when export of pomegranates from Kandahar to Pakistan has been stopped following the closure of the commercial border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
