Taking the decision to return to Bangladesh is not in my power alone: Tariq Rahman

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s self-exiled acting president Tariq Rahman on Saturday said it was not entirely in his hands to return to his homeland to meet his mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is suffering from a “very serious” illness.

The 80-year-old BNP chief Zia was admitted to a private hospital on November 23 after a chest infection affected her heart and both lungs. Rahman, 60, who has been living in London since 2008, said in a post on Facebook on Saturday that “like any child” he wants to be with his mother during this difficult time.

He said, “But unlike others, it is not in my hands and nor in my power to take a unilateral decision in this regard. Considering the sensitivity of this matter, not much can be said.” Rehman said his family is still hopeful that once the political turmoil subsides, their wait to return home will be over.
