The biggest challenge: religious dispute and Political TurnsPuthal Return between Sukhbir Badal resigned as party president on 16 November 2024. He was then declared ‘Tanakhaiya’ (religious guilty) by Akal Takht. On 2 December 2025, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh described the entire party leadership including Sukhbir as “unqualified to run the party”.
Subsequently, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) removed Giani Raghbir Singh from his post and replaced Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj.
SAD spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema has already made it clear that the party leadership has already suffered religious punishment as per the instructions of Akal Takht. When someone suffers religious punishment, it becomes pure and old things are considered to be finished.

He was also attacked during the religious punishment outside the Golden Temple, but he stayed.”
Sukhbir Badal first became party president in December 2008, when his father Prakash Singh Badal was the Chief Minister of Punjab. He was said to be the leader of the future to bring the politics of ‘corporate style’ to the party, but the party’s dissatisfaction increased after a continuous defeat from the 2017 assembly elections.
The Akali Dal, which was in power in Punjab from 2007 to 2017, was reduced to just three MLAs in the 2022 assembly elections and won only one MP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Two challenges in front of Akali Dal Saturday’s election is considered to be the beginning of a new chapter for sect politics, but now in front of the Akali Dal, apart from the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP, there are two big challenges.
- Amritpal Singh, MP from Khadur Sahib and supporter of Khalistan, has already created the new Akali Dal Waris Punjab De.
- The rebel leader of the Akali Dal, who first formed the Akal Dal Reform Committee, is not clear about their next strategy. Sources believe that they can either claim the leadership by calling themselves real Akali or form a new political party.

The party stepped into the political field by winning 10 seats in the 1937 Provincial elections.
The Akali Dal strongly opposed the country at the time of partition of the country. On the news of Ferozepur and Jeera being mixed in Pakistan, Master Tara Singh reached Delhi and stopped this decision from Viceroy. He had only 36 rupees after a struggling life.
