The Trump administration has cracked down on Punjabi youth who went to America in search of jobs based on their driving skills. English speaking has been made mandatory for truck drivers and tests are being conducted for this purpose.
The Trump administration implemented this rule after an accident involving truck drivers in Punjab. Police are also stopping truck drivers on the roads and conducting English speaking tests. More than 7,000 non-American truck drivers have failed the test so far. Their licenses have been suspended.
Let us tell you that there are currently 1,50,000 Punjabi drivers in America. According to US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy, many drivers could not speak English correctly during the English test that lasted until October 30, and some could not tell about the traffic sign written in English.
Let us tell you that in view of the frequent accidents, the American government banned visas for Indian drivers about two months ago. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced this on his social media account.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that according to U.S. transportation laws, all truck drivers are required to read and speak traffic signs in English. Without it, they are not licensed. The issue was not taken seriously during the Obama administration, resulting in licenses being issued to drivers who failed the English test.
Duffy said that following the increasing number of truck accidents in the US, President Donald Trump has made the English test mandatory starting June 25, 2025. Under the new policy, US police are now conducting roadside tests of drivers. Truck drivers who cannot speak English are immediately removed from their trucks.
Duffy said the state of California opposed the English-speaking requirement. English is not mandatory for commercial licenses there. While there is an English test, those who know little English can get a license. Due to this, more Indian drivers take license from here.
