Singapore is harassing digital fanaticism, ‘terrorist threat’ increasing among youth

Singapore’s Internal Security Department (ISD) has warned that the level of terrorist danger in the country still remains high. For this, it has cited the increasing influence of various extremist ideologies and misuse of advanced techniques such as artificial intelligence to spread radical materials. According to the ISD’s Singapore Terrorism Danger Assessment Report 2025, the unstable global landscape affected by the ongoing Israel-Filistini conflict and continuation of radical narratives has accelerated the spread of extremist beliefs. Channel News Asia reported that such circumstances have intensified ideological spread globally and within Singapore as well.

ISD highlighted the growing role of digital platforms in fundamentalism, especially among the youth. Social media and messaging services like WhatsApp, Telegram, X (East Twitter), Redit and Instagram as well as gaming platforms such as discords and robox and video-sharing sites such as gaming platforms and YouTube and Bichute are being used to spread extreme materials. From July 2024 to June 2025, eight self -contactable Singapuri – six men and two women between the ages of 15 to 56 – were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA). Four of these persons were influenced by the growing Israel-Pilstinian conflict in October 2023, two ISIS ideologies and two were affected by extreme extremism. All eight faced online radical materials.

Half of the eight cases of recent self-contradiction were belonging to individuals aged 20 years or less, which reflects a worrying increase in youth participation. The ISD said it reflects global trends. In many Western countries, one in five terrorist suspects are under 18 years of age, while European reports have found that ISIS-related arrests include about two-thirds of teenagers. Since 2015, action has been taken under the ISA with a total of 60 self-contactors, including 48 Singapuri and 12 foreigners.
