A few hours after the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk in connection with the violence in Ladakh on Wednesday, the administration suspended mobile internet services in Leh on Friday. Four people died and several others were injured in this violence. Wangchuk, 59, started a protest against the central government and demanded that Ladakh be included in the sixth schedule of the Constitution. The neo-reformist Wangchuk has also demanded state status for the Union Territory (UT), which was separated from Jammu and Kashmir after the Center canceled Article 370 in August 2019.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) also canceled the foreign funding license of a non-governmental organization (NGO), Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) established by Wangchuk. In its order, the Union Home Ministry said that the NGO of Wangchuk received the cash amount, which is a violation of Section 17 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. The order of the Ministry of Home Affairs said that apart from this, the association has reported an amount of Rs 3.35 lakh in the form of FC donation from Sonam Wangchuk. However, this transaction is not shown in the FCRA account, which is a violation of Section 18 of the Act.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk has criticized the government’s action against him, calling it a ‘strategy of making a goat of sacrifice’. Speaking to the news agency PTI, Wangchuk alleged that the central government was making a case against him and planning to punish him for a few years. He also said that he is ready to go to jail. Wangchuk said that it is to say that it was incited by me or sometimes by the Congress, rather than reaching the root of the problem, finding a goat of sacrifice, and it would not benefit us. “He further said,” They can be clever in making someone else a sacrifice of sacrifice, but they are not intelligent.
