Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be the first President of the country to serve a jail sentence. He is scheduled to begin his five-year sentence at La Sainte prison in Paris from Tuesday. Sarkozy has been found guilty of criminal conspiracy to finance his 2007 election campaign with money from Libya, although he maintains his innocence. Sarkozy will be held in the same prison that has housed some of the most high-profile prisoners since the 19th century.

Sarkozy told ‘Le Figaro’ newspaper that he expected to be kept in solitary confinement. For security reasons they may be kept away from all other prisoners, or another possibility is that they may be kept in a section of the prison for “sensitive” prisoners, colloquially known as the ‘VIP section’. In an unprecedented ruling, a Paris judge said Sarkozy would begin serving his prison sentence without waiting for his appeal to be heard.

On this, the former President declared himself innocent and opposed the decision to keep him in jail pending the appeal. “I am not afraid of going to jail,” Sarkozy told ‘La Tribune Dimanche’ newspaper. I’ll hold my head high, even in front of La Sante’s door. I will fight till the end.” According to the news of ‘La Tribune Dimanche’, Sarkozy has kept clothes and 10 family photographs in his bag, which he has been allowed to take with him.
