Shiv Sena UBT on Monday announced that it would not participate in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025. Party MP Sanjay Raut made this announcement. In a social media post on X, the Shiv Sena UBT MP alleged that the central government was loading the bill for “crushing democracy and elected governments”. It is written in the social media post that the Modi government is bringing a 130th constitution amendment to crush democracy and the government elected by the people. JPC, formed to review this bill, is just a gimmick. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray makes it clear that Shiv Sena will not participate in any such JPC.

The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 proposes to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers automatically if they are arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days in allegations of imprisonment for five years or more. The bill has been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed investigation, which includes 31 members of both houses of Parliament. This committee will investigate the bill and will give its recommendations before voting.
In an interview to ANI, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed confidence that despite the sharp criticism of the opposition, the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 will be passed. Amit Shah defended the bill and said that its purpose is to maintain “constitutional morality” and public confidence. He stressed that this bill will be equally applicable to all leaders including the ruling party. He said, “I am confident that it will be passed. There will be many people in the Congress party and the opposition who will support morality and maintain moral grounds …”

On the 130th Amendment Bill, Shah said, “The Prime Minister himself has included the post of Prime Minister in it … Earlier, Indira Gandhi brought the 39th amendment (President, Vice President, Prime Minister and Lok Sabha Speaker to save him from judicial review) … Narendra Modi ji has brought a constitution amendment against himself that if the Prime Minister went to jail, he will have to resign if the Prime Minister went to jail …” Shah introduced the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which aims to remove the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers from the post, if he is arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days on charges of imprisonment of five years or more.
