Sheikh Hasina accused of ‘crime against humanity’, case started in Bangladesh for a role in 2024 student rebellion

Bangladesh prosecutors on Sunday accused former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of crime against humanity for his alleged role in violent action during a 2024 student-led rebellion. Due to this rebellion, he eventually had to resign from his post. This is a formal beginning of the 77-year-old leader’s trial, who are currently living in self-government in India.
Serious allegations against Sheikh Hasina
According to the prosecutors, an investigation report has revealed that Hasina had given direct orders to the state security forces, their political parties and the groups associated with them. Due to these orders, such campaigns were carried out in which a large number of people were killed or injured. He is accused of ‘failure, provocation, connivance, facilitating, plotting and failing to prevent mass murder during the July rebellion.
Prosecutors reported ‘coordinated attack’
Bangladesh’s Domestic International Crime Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam on Sunday, citing video evidence and encrypted communication between various agencies during a television hearing, said, “These murders were planned.”
The news agency AFP quoted the chief prosecutor as saying, “After examining the evidence, we came to the conclusion that it was a coordinated, broad and systematic attack. The accused (Sheikh Hasina) had deployed all law enforcement agencies and members of his armed party to crush the rebellion.”

Former home minister and police chief also co-accused
The prosecutors further alleged that as the head of the government, Hasina was commanding the operations of the security forces during the unrest. Along with Hasina, former Home Minister Asdujman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chaudhary Abdullah al-Mamoon have also been made co-accused in the complaint filed in the court.
