Shah’s attack on Congress: misled GST for years, Modi fulfilled constitutional promise

Union Home Minister Amit Shah appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership on the occasion of the 75th birthday and appreciated him for fulfilling the “constitutional promises” made from the states. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an improvement that was pending during the Congress -led governments. In an interview to News18, the Union Minister said that Prime Minister Modi always keeps the nation at the top. Shah insisted that the Prime Minister’s leadership has not only strengthened the economy, but has also changed India’s global status, social welfare and national security.

Shah said that when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he had given a constitutional guarantee that the revenue growth rate of the states would be almost doubled with the tax collection. He made a constitutional promise and fulfilled it. Almost all states will get payment by November. Criticizing the Congress party for not being able to implement GST despite years of discussion, Shah said, “GST has been discussed since the time of the Congress government, when Mr. Chidambaram was the Finance Minister and when Mr. Pranab Mukherjee was the Finance Minister. The Congress is trying to mislead by saying that it was his idea. Okay, if it was your idea, why was it never applied?”

He clarified that the states had opposed this reform due to concerns of revenue reduction. He further said that everyone knew that GST would reduce the resources of the states, so the state was demanding a guarantee from the center. The Congress never gave this guarantee nor did it ever agreed, which is why GST has never been implemented. Shah said, “People see that if they pay taxes and increase the revenue of the government, the government will benefit through tax cuts, which makes confidence in governance strong. It was invisible since independence, but now it is visible for the first time.”

The Union Minister said that a decade of Prime Minister Modi’s tenure has “raised the pride of India”. He insisted, “If we talk about achievements, then most of the achievements have come only during Modi ji’s tenure. He has increased the pride of every citizen and raised his head.” The Union Minister also described the Kornavirus epidemic as the most difficult challenge led by Modi. He said, “Today the whole world believes that India’s Kovid management was the best.” Recalling the measures of Prime Minister Modi like public curfew, plate playing and burning lamps, he said that he created a collective mindset. Shah said, “Some people said that playing the plate will not stop Kornavirus, some said that burning lamps will not help, but these measures helped every Indian to create a mentality to unite to fight the virus.”
