But there are many warriors about whom many people do not know and they remained in oblivion till today. Kartar Singh Sarabha is one of those warriors. Who sacrificed his life for the country at the age of 19.

Let’s know about the life of Kartar Singh.

Kartar Singh Sarabha was a great Indian revolutionary. The most interesting thing is that the hero of all of us, Shaheed Bhagat Singh considered him as his hero, friend and guru. Yes, the sacrifice of Kartar Singh Sarabha inspired Bhagat Singh to die for the country.

Sarabha went to America to study

Kartar Singh was born on 24 May 1896 in the village of Sarabha in Punjab. He was the only son born in a Sikh family. He was very young when his father died and he was raised by his grandfather. Undivided Punjab, where Kartar Singh Sarabha was born, was hit by a severe drought.

In such a situation, Punjabis have started migrating to places like Canada and America in search of work. By the first decade of the 20th century, thousands of Punjabis had migrated to these countries. In July 1912, Sarabha arrived in San Francisco for his higher studies at the University of California, Berkeley. However, his experiences in California changed the course of his future.

Understand the meaning of being a slave of the country abroad

Americans’ hatred of immigrants to America, especially those coming from enslaved countries in the British Empire, was palpable. Sarabha also worked as a laborer in California like many other Indian immigrants. Here he faced the humiliation of being from a slave country and after that his future direction changed.

Indians in America often come together to discuss their problems and share their sorrows. Through such meetings and discussions, Sarabha started working towards ousting the British from India. The Gathering Party was founded in Oregon in 1913. It was an organization of Indians who wanted to restore the dignity of their people by overthrowing the British rule in India through armed rebellion. The organization was headquartered in San Francisco and many Indians including Sarabha were part of it.

return to the country

In July 1914, when Europe was in turmoil due to World War I, these revolutionaries saw an opportunity to attack the British. He planned to take the Ghadar Party people organized in America to India. Kartar Singh was one of the revolutionaries who returned to India in late 1914. Many of them were arrested by the British authorities on their arrival.

But people like Kartar Singh, and Ras Bihari Bose worked to organize the Indian soldiers against the British by sifting through the cantonments in the Punjab. However, before the Ghadar Party could rebel, the British surrounded and arrested the activists.

Kartar Singh did not apologize

The British tried the Lahore Conspiracy case against the Ghadar Party people. Kartar Singh Sarabha was also included in these arrested persons. Two books were recovered from him. Kartar was only 18 and a half years old at that time. Kartar Singh was pressured in the court to apologize to the British but he did not do so. Rather, he proudly told the judge that he was not afraid of the death penalty. He will choose death for himself better than imprisonment so that he can be reborn and fight for the freedom of his country.

At that time the judge is said to have said that he was the most dangerous of all the revolutionaries and a great threat to the British rule. That is why Kartar was sentenced to death.

He was only 19 years old when he was hanged along with his compatriot Vishnu Ganesh Pingle in the Lahore Central Jail on 16 November 1915. Kartar Singh became a symbol of martyrdom and he continued to inspire youth like Bhagat Singh for revolution.
