During the May holidays, the Netherlands’ Schiphol Airport will increase the average number of daily departing passengers by 65 per cent from 40,000 in winter 2022 to 66,000 this May.

Data provided to Schiphol Airport also revealed that on peak days in May, the number of departing passengers will be well over 70,000, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“Schiphol believes a five per cent easing of the busy morning peak is needed to reduce the risk of unacceptable delays for travellers at check-in, security check and passport control. This means five per cent fewer seats can be booked,” the report reads.

According to the same source, the number of passengers who will depart from Schiphol this year is 14 per cent higher than the number of passengers who departed on May Day last year, where there were an average of 58,000 passengers and slightly below the figures of 2019 when about 72,000 passengers departed every day.

Last month, Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport announced that it plans to expand its capacity to board all travellers from and to the Netherlands.

Whereas throughout the whole 2022, a total of 52.5 million passengers travelled to, from or through the Netherlands’ Schiphol Airport.

According to airport data, this figure shows an increase of 106 per cent compared to 2021, when 25.5 million travellers were registered at the airport. It was 27 per cent less than in 2019 when 71.7 million travellers travelled through Schiphol.

In addition, statistics also show that Eindhoven Airport, which is also under the management of the Schiphol Group, has yet to reach the number of passengers registered before 2019. Meanwhile, the third airport managed by this group, the Hague Airport in Rotterdam recorded an increase of 0.8 per cent compared to 2019.

Further data from Schiphol also revealed that of the total 52.5 million passengers in 2022, 37 per cent of them had a connecting flight at Schiphol, which means that 9.6 million passengers were transfer passengers.

Previously, Amsterdam Schiphol airport authorities revealed that almost four million passengers flew from, through or to Schiphol last November alone. Based on these data, in November 2021, this number was 3.1 million, while in November 2020, it was 0.9 million due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and 5.3 million passengers in November 2019.

Moreover, during November 2022, the number of commercial flights to and from Schiphol was 30,349, marking an increase of seven per cent compared to 2021, +104 per cent compared to 2020 and -20 per cent compared to 2019.
